The Use of Irony in Barbara L. Greenbergs The Faithful Wife Essay
The Use of Irony in Barbara L. Greenberg's The Faithful Wife "The Faithful Wife" by Barbara L. Greenberg is a fascinating, satirical account of what the speaker would do if she were unfaithful to her husband. Upon the first reading of this poem, I thought the woman in this poem was saying that her husband was irreplaceable and because of that she would never be unfaithful. Also I thought that if she did betray him, she would choose someone totally different from him, which somehow wouldn't dishonor this great man. However, with repeated reading, my opinion changed. Greenberg did an incredible job of revealing the truth of the situation. She used verbal irony to explain how the wife in the poem is actually revealing the relationship she does have with her husband and describing the type of relationship she would like to have. Greenberg uses more formal diction to convey her message in "The Faithful Wife." The poem is not written in everyday language. It is missing the colloquial elements of contractions and slang. While it seems to be a conversation anyone could have, it is no...

Moore Medical Corporation – Analysis to It Investments
CASE ANALYSIS Document Version: 1. 0 Moore Medical Corporation Analysis to IT investments Dilip IT for Business Managers Business Background â⬠¢ Moore Medical Corporation founded in 1947 is a distributor of medical supplies. The company had built its business model taking care of specific groups of practitioners such as podiatrists and emergency medical service personnel. â⬠¢ Moore provides more than 8500 products and the company had divided its customers into six groups. Moore has a strong tradition of accurately maintaining customer orders. â⬠¢ Mooreââ¬â¢s current IT infrastructure and spending was above the industry average implementing most of the latest technologies like ERP, telemarketing and e-commerce. Case Issues and Results Issue ââ¬â 1: Linda Autore, the CEO of Moore Medical, Inc was unsure if she needed to spend any of the companyââ¬â¢s funds on CRM software. Solution and Analysis: It is definitely true that CRM provides an integrated record of all customer contacts through all channels, assembling an optimal schedule of appointments for sales people which would lead to a better consistency of Mooreââ¬â¢s interaction with its customers; however from the analysis of the case I see that Moore has currently a tradition of accurately and quickly filling customer orders which had no problems. From the technology perspective it is definitely great to get a company like Moore to be updated with CRM but however looking at the current problem that Moore faces I believe itââ¬â¢s not worth wasting an investment in CRM. Issue ââ¬â 2: Moore has spent $7 million in implementing the ERP; however Mooreââ¬â¢s ERP implementation was not very satisfying since it was not fully utilizing the information retained in the system and was also inferior to what had been in place previously. Solution and Analysis: ERP is an excellent database system provided it has been implemented with respect to the companyââ¬â¢s requirements. From the case I see that Mooreââ¬â¢s ERP was unsuccessful and had shortcomings that were required to be fixed immediately. ERP covers all areas from finance, logistics to marketing and also Mooreââ¬â¢s latest e-commerce website. I believe an additional investment of $600,000 to purchase the ââ¬ËBolt onââ¬â¢ software is necessary to realize the $7 million investment made in the ERP. Issue ââ¬â 3: One of the major problems faced with Moore in their ERP systems was their poor implementation of demand planning. Mooreââ¬â¢s performance on the ââ¬Å"Perfect Orderâ⬠was way below their expected goal of 90% as shown in Exhibit 5. Solution and Analysis: It is mentioned in the case that 84% of the non-perfect orders are due to demand planning issues. Even if the company spends $300,000 on each of the four models which are in consideration to solve the forecasting issue the company would spend only $1. million. It must be noted that this additional cost will help the company in increased revenues, reduced costs and better customer satisfaction. Issue ââ¬â 4: Is Companyââ¬â¢s decision to move to personal e-commerce a right choice? Solution: From the available information and looking at exhibit 7 I believe the traffic and income generated towards personal e-commerce has been increased substantially in six months since the start of the new website. However my suggestion to Moore is that it withdraws from yahoo is a phased manner. Relevance and analysis From the analysis of Moore Corporation I believe they have made relevant investments in IT infrastructure; however the company lacks a strategy to implement them. I believe the company needs to prioritize their requirements from their business point of view. Here I believe CRM is an important tool to improve customer relationships but however they need to set their prior projects right before setting their eye on CRM. Their initial priority is to set right the ERP which would set right the demand planning issue also. Setting the ERP right would help also help in achieving good revenue from e-commerce applications. IT is definitely a solution to a particular problem, such as customer acquisition and retention, increased revenues and provides employees an efficient tool; however the goals of IT should be linked to the corporate strategy. Investing blindly in IT without a strategy will not derive the desired result.

Are Punchlines Necessary for Ads? Essay
Punch lines are the need for advertising the product as they are necessary for a product to be unique and be different. For example: ââ¬Å"The complete manâ⬠which makes us remember the company Raymonds. Punch lines are important to make the customer remember about the product identity. It helps to recall a product easily. But it cannot rule the advertisement as ultimately the customer remembers quality and cost. Customer only sees whether he is getting the satisfactory service or not. Also after service of a product offered by company is important if the company is good, gets reputation and rules the market. Only attractive punchlines will not help. For example, if I say ââ¬Å"Paanch matalab chota cokeâ⬠, it will suddenly remind you the ad of coca cola (even though itââ¬â¢s not on air now). So, this way punch line increases the recall value of the ad but if your ad or positioning of the product is not perfect then you canââ¬â¢t expect your advt programme to be successful just on the basis of punchlines. It is very difficult to find out the right Punchline. Marketers have to select right words to form that sentences which can correctly express the positioning strategy of the brand. A bad Punchline can kill a good ââ¬Ëadââ¬â¢. If the Punchline strikes customers as attractive due to repeated exposure it ââ¬Ëchangesââ¬â¢ the mindset of the customer creating new set of beliefs. The Punchline represents the values of the company, benefits, attributes, features, quality, cost, special technology. If we really want to appreciate the value of Punchlines, then imagine an advertisement without any Punchline. It looks like a dumb. So basically the Punchline is the voice of the brand, which primarily gives out the minimum momentum, thrust to push the brand in the mind of the customer. A punch line has to have an element of surprise in it. Humour is also an essential aspect of advertising because a dose of laughter instantly connects the masses with a campaign. The main objective of advertising is to appeal to the consumer and a punch line should always be linked with the product. Also, there has to be something new, something which the people can connect with instantly. The best punch line strikes a chord with people and creates magic. But, certain good companies such as ââ¬Å"Colgateâ⬠donââ¬â¢t have got a punch line but still it is ruling the market for years. Basically, the work of punch line is to own a space in the minds of customer and create some easy recall of the ad. But it takes a lot of imagination to come up with something as simple yet as effective as gale ki khichkhich from the Vicks campaign. Such was the power of this simple line that now, irritation in throat is called khichkhich by a majority of people. And it instantly connects the feeling to Vicks. This linking of products, or brand recall, is what makes a punch line successful. Products come and go, but punch lines always stay.

If U.S. Sneezes the World Catches Cold Essay Example
If U.S. Sneezes the World Catches Cold Essay Example If U.S. Sneezes the World Catches Cold Paper If U.S. Sneezes the World Catches Cold Paper Essay Topic: The Godfather If the US economy sneezes the world catches cold- There has been an intriguing competition of bombarding between the United States and the economists. The US bombarding countries like Iraq and economists bombarding us with words such as week US economy, recession, decoupling, stronger emerging economies etc. So, to analyze the above proposition we ask the question ââ¬Å"is united states economy is really the godfather of all economies of the world? â⬠To answer this question we consider two aspects 1. The GDP and consumption expenditure of U. S. 2. Trade Balance and external debt of U. S. For some time now we have been eulogizing the emergence of China and India in the world economic forum. However the GDP of China is at $3. 3 Trillion and that of India is 1. 1 trillion. The GDP of us stands at a staggering $13. 8 trillion (World Bank estimates). Even at purchasing power parity (ppp) or simply the law of one price-U. S. ââ¬â¢ GDP is double of that of any country. In fact the U. S. and European Union together correspond to nearly 45% of worldââ¬â¢s GDP. Now, take into account the fact that by nature Indians and Chinese are savers. The household domestic savings in India is about 23% and China more than 25% significantly less than the U. S. The marginal propensity to consume in India is . 65 while that in U. S. is about . 9. Thus, if we calculate the consumption expenditure then Indiaââ¬â¢s total consumption would be about . 7 trillion, Chinaââ¬â¢s 2 trillion and that of U. S. more than 10 triilion. Now lets consider the economics of the trade dynamics of U. S. US has a high trade deficit. It is a net importer of goods. 50% of its total imports come from countries such as China, Japan and germany. U. S. has a trade deficit of 20 million with China, with China exporting large amount of manufacturing, engineering and finished goods. India is a vast exporter of services to the U. S. U. S. is also a huge debtor in the world market. Of the total external debt floating in the world, 22% of that debt is under U. S. Having had an insight into the U. S. economy let us make true the fears of the world- that there a demand led recession in U. S. Given the mammoth size of its economy, this would lead to a huge fall in the world demand. Thus, heavily industrialized nations such as Japan, China and Germany would be hit hard. This would lead to a price war, even to government subsidy leading to a drive out of many products of many countries. Especially India and Africa which have a higher cost of production than China would suffer. Europe and Japan are significantly developed and saturated markets. Further, the European Union because of its high interdependence and trade links with the U. S. economy behaves in a similar manner as U. S. economy. Thus, more countries would dumb their goods in the home market and hence do not have the capacity to absorb the additional rise in production. This would in turn lead to a fall in production. Even the service sector would be see large scale loss in jobs. Already with the low growth scenario for the previous three fiscals, we have seen large scale cut in jobs in the IT sector in U. S. and even countries exporting services such as India. Add to it the political hegemony of U. S. nd a worldwide recession seems inevitable. Empirically we have seen a fall in the US growth rates been coupled with a fall in the world gdp growth rate by 2%-3%. So as of today the above proposition seems to hold true. However a significant question to ask here whether the U. S. economy is strong enough to continue its economic hegemony. The us economy has been tremendously resilient in the past century and that is why it has had such an economic influenc e on the world. For no war or political turmoil had a long lasting effect on the U. S. economy. However, the B-R-I-C countries and especially China will in future surely challenge that. Here again the dynamics are intriguing. For china will be first country since World War II to challenge the US on three independent spheres- economic, political and military. On the economic sphere Chinaââ¬â¢s economy has doubled over the past decade and it is increasingly tapping new resources, liberalizing trade, finding new markets such as Africa and Latin America. The major constraint that the Chinese economy faces is that high inflation (18%-20%) and low domestic demand mobilization. Hence most of its production is export oriented. However given the track record of the double digit growth rates that the Chinese economy has been recording it seems quite inevitable that the Chinese economy will soon challenge the U. S. add to it a stronger Indian economy and we could see a reorientation of economic power, a shift eastwards. And then the next question is what the shift in power dynamics would be like-for in history we have seen countries waging war to overthrow empires and superpowers. However with the kind of nuclear power that the countries posses today, a war seems not very reasonable. So then would ââ¬Å"the road to the east run through the westâ⬠, that is US be giving China, India more space in the UNO to formulate its policies,theG8 countries expand to include the emerging China, India. Or would the US resent and sneeze for the world to catch another cold (War)? Reference: Foreign Affairs (Jan/Feb 08)- Richardson- Huckabee English. pravda. ru

History of the Apple Macintosh
History of the Apple Macintosh In December of 1983, Apple Computers ran its famous 1984 Macintosh television commercial on a small unknown station solely to make the commercial eligible for awards. The commercial cost $1.5 million and only ran once in 1983, but news and talk shows everywhere replayed it, making TV history. The next month, Apple Computer ran the same ad during the Super Bowl and millions of viewers saw their first glimpse of the Macintosh computer. The commercial was directed by Ridley Scott, and the Orwellian scene depicted the IBM world being destroyed by a new machine called the Macintosh. Could we expect anything less from a company that was once run by the former president of Pepsi-Cola?à Steve Jobs, co-founder ofà Apple Computersà had been trying to hire Pepsis John Sculley since early 1983. While he eventually succeeded, Jobs soon discovered that he did not get along with Sculley who, after becoming CEO of Apple Computers, ended up booting him off Appleââ¬â¢s Lisa project. The Lisa was the first consumer computer with a graphical user interface or GUI. Steve Jobs and the Macintosh Computer Jobs then switched over to managing the Apple Macintosh project that was started by Jeff Raskin. Jobs was determined that the new Macintosh was going to have a graphical user interface like the Lisa, but at a considerably lower cost. The early Mac team members (1979) consisted of Jeff Raskin, Brian Howard, Marc LeBrun, Burrell Smith, Joanna Hoffman and Bud Tribble. Others began working working on the Mac at later dates. Seventy-four days after the introduction of the Macintosh, the company was only able to sell 50,000 units. At the time, Apple refused to license the OS or the hardware, the 128k memory was not enough and the onboard floppy drive was difficult to use. The Macintosh did have Lisas user friendly GUI, but was missing some of the more powerful features of the Lisa, such as multitasking and the 1 MB of memory. Jobs compensated by making sure developers created software for the new Macintosh, Jobs figured that software was the way to win the consumer over and in 1985, the Macintosh computer line received a big sales boost with the introduction of the LaserWriter printer and Aldus PageMaker, which made home desktop publishing possible. That was also the year that the original founders of Apple left the company. Power Struggle at Apple Computers Steve Wozniakà returned to college and Steve Jobs was fired as his difficulties with John Sculley came to a head. Jobs had decided to regain control of the company from Sculley by scheduling a business meeting in China for Sculley and so that Jobs could carry out a corporate takeover while Sculley was absent. Word of Jobs true motives reached Sculley before the China trip and he confronted Jobs and asked Apples Board of Directors to vote on the issue. Everyone voted for Sculley and so, in lieu of being fired, Jobs quit. Jobs later rejoined Apple in 1996 and has happily worked there ever since. Sculley was eventually replaced as CEO of Apple.

Intercessory Prayer Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Intercessory Prayer - Case Study Example Even taking medicine and not having faith that one will be healed, does not help. Most of the researches that indicate positive links between prayer and health are situated in areas that possess strong Christian customs (Paul, 2008). Prayer is a coping action that mediates between religious faith and health, and can take different forms. Devotional prayers involving a close dialogue with a compassionate God are related with enhanced optimism, health and function. On the contrary, prayers that entail pleas for aid may, in the lack of faith, be linked with augmented distress and perhaps poor function (Kuchan, 2008). People should be encouraged to engage in prayer and have faith in God who heals. In the assessment of their faith, those with no faith but who just try the effectiveness of prayer cannot be healed. Hospitalized patients who have no faith and whose prayers entail desperate supplication for help are prone to need extra support from experienced nursing and chaplaincy personnel (Kuchan,

Blog Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Blog - Article Example The organizations, big and small, scattered around the globe tend to have more than their ample share of what may be called the bad managers, whose only concern seems to be to mar the organizational efficiency and nip the talent right in the bud, wherever it is deployed within or outside the organization, thereby restraining the organization from achieving the levels of productivity and efficiency that may shock the shareholders, pushing most of them towards a premature stroke or heart attack (Lussier and Achua 5). One other role of bad managers is to give way to a pervasive despondency, apathy and cynicism within organizations so that employees may genuinely end up believing that they scarcely deserve a promotion or a raise, thereby sparing the organizations from splurging much money in the name of motivation and efficiency. When it comes to recruiting bad managers, the organizations may complain of a serious dearth of real talent. However, the good news is that bad managers happen to be just like regular managers with a discerning pool of skills and abilities at their disposal, which help them justify their title and denomination. While talking of bad managers, the one person that emerges on the canvass of my memory is Mr. Dam Doolittle, a paragon of managerial dexterity and a virtual paradigm of a bad manager, whom I came across while working in a local advertisement firm. One thing that outshined Mr. Doolittle from the pool of inefficient menials working under his tutelage in the firm was his panache for professional outlook. Mr. Doolittle had a passion for designer suits, ties and Italian patent leather shoes. Perhaps his guiding maxim was that if one successfully managed to look like a manager, than perhaps 99 percent of oneââ¬â¢s job is done. No wonder, Mr. Doolittleââ¬â¢s managing acumen stood to be merely skin deep and superficial like the garishness of his apparels. However, sadly, this was not the be-all and end-all of his managerial acumen and talent. Mr. Doolittle indeed was endowed by the providence with some rare and special skills that aptly placed him at an assorted place in the hall of fame of the worst managers. His reputation was indeed well deserved and well earned, scarcely impervious to any tarnishing by the ravages of time or bursts of organizational change. When it came to micro management, it goes without saying that on this entire globe there scarcely existed a manager born of a human womb that could match the adroitness of Mr. Doolittle. Mr. Doolittle scarcely believed in the obsolete concept of ââ¬Ëvisionââ¬â¢. He was a stickler for change. He believed that in the current times defined by fast altering consumer preferences and the onslaught of digital solutions, ââ¬Ëvisionââ¬â¢ happened to be a thing of the past. He not only believed in leading from the front merely, but generously spread his management talent, right, left, behind and center, firmly convinced that the day he contracts his man agerial acumen from the floor, the business will virtually fall down on its knees. He believed in ruthlessly cracking the whip whenever and wherever the need be, luckily restrained by the organizational norms from wielding a whip in the literal sense. Being deprived of the superfluous notion of vision, the employees mostly felt insecure, confused and intimidated, and that is how Mr. Dam Doolittle expected them to be (Benfari 109). Esteemed to be a manager worth his salt, he had
